In “Californication,” the Red Hot Chili Peppers mention Alderaan, the Star Wars planet associated with Princess Leia. The reference appears in the song’s line about Alderaan being “not far away.”
Alderaan is a peaceful planet in the Star Wars universe and the homeworld of Leia Organa. In the 1977 film Star Wars, the Death Star destroys it as a demonstration of the station’s power. That destruction makes Alderaan one of the franchise’s most recognizable fictional planets.
“Californication” was released in 1999 as the title track of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ seventh studio album. Its lyrics move rapidly through images of Hollywood, space, celebrity culture, war, and manufactured fantasy, making the Star Wars reference part of a larger meditation on California’s influence.
Some unofficial lyric transcriptions spell the name “Alderon,” but the canonical Star Wars spelling is Alderaan. The song’s intended reference is therefore clearly Alderaan, not another Star Wars location.
