In The Wolverine, what is the name of the Japanese soldier Logan saved during World War II?

The story behind the answer

In The Wolverine, the Japanese soldier Logan saved during World War II is Ichirō Yashida.

The film opens in 1945 at Nagasaki, where Logan saves Yashida from the atomic bombing. Decades later, the elderly Yashida summons Logan to Japan, believing that the mutant’s healing ability could help him avoid death.

Yashida is played as an old man by Hal Yamanouchi and as a younger soldier by Ken Yamamura. His wartime encounter with Logan becomes the foundation of their later relationship and the film’s central conflict.

The name is easy to confuse with Shingen Yashida, Yashida’s son, and Mariko Yashida, his granddaughter. Those characters are also central to the Japanese storyline, but they are not the soldier rescued at Nagasaki.
