In The Walking Dead comic series, what is the name of the sheriff who leads the survivors?

The story behind the answer

Rick Grimes is the sheriff who leads the survivors in The Walking Dead comic series.

Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore introduced Rick in The Walking Dead #1, published by Image Comics in 2003. Rick begins the story in a coma after being shot while pursuing criminals. When he wakes, his hometown is largely deserted and the zombie apocalypse has transformed society.

Rick’s law-enforcement background shapes his early leadership, but the comic repeatedly tests his ideas about justice, family, and authority. His son Carl, wife Lori, and friend Shane are central to the early storyline, while later arcs expand the group far beyond its original Atlanta setting.

The television adaptation also uses Rick Grimes as its central character, but comic and television continuity differ substantially. The comic’s Rick is especially associated with the survivor communities that develop around Atlanta, the prison, Alexandria, and later settlements.
