Kevin Spacey played Roger “Verbal” Kint in The Usual Suspects (1995).
Verbal Kint is a physically disabled small-time criminal who recounts the events surrounding a disastrous heist to U.S. Customs agent Dave Kujan. The film is structured around his account, making his performance central to the story’s shifting perspective and its famous final revelation.
Spacey won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role at the 68th Academy Awards. The screenplay was written by Christopher McQuarrie, who also won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Bryan Singer directed the film.
The movie’s title comes from a line in the 1942 film Casablanca, in which Captain Renault refers to “the usual suspects.” A common mix-up is to identify Gabriel Byrne as the film’s narrator; Byrne played Dean Keaton, while Spacey played Verbal Kint.
