In The Terminator 2: Judgment Day, John Connor teaches the T-800 to say “Hasta la vista, baby.”

John notices that the T-800 uses unusually formal language and coaches it in a more casual phrase. Later, the reprogrammed Terminator uses the line before destroying the liquid-metal T-1000 in a steel mill. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the T-800, and Edward Furlong plays John Connor.

James Cameron directed and co-wrote the 1991 sequel. The movie changes the first film’s premise by making the T-800 a protector rather than an assassin. Robert Patrick plays the T-1000, whose ability to imitate people and reshape its body makes it a very different enemy.

The Spanish phrase literally means “until the sight,” but its established English meaning is “see you later.” The wording is often linked to Schwarzenegger’s public persona and became a major catchphrase after the film. It should not be confused with the first Terminator film’s separate promise about returning.
