Donatello uses a bo staff as his signature weapon in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.
The bo staff is a long Japanese martial-arts weapon, and Donatello’s weapon choice fits his role as the team’s inventor and technical expert. In many versions, he modifies or combines the staff with mechanical features, reflecting his engineering skills.
The four turtles are usually distinguished by their weapons as well as their personalities. Leonardo fights with twin swords, Raphael uses twin sai, and Michelangelo uses nunchaku. Donatello’s bo staff therefore provides a clear canonical match, although specific adaptations sometimes show variations in how the weapon works.
Donatello was named after the Italian Renaissance sculptor Donatello. His purple mask became his most common visual identifier in the 1987 cartoon and later versions, while the original comics used a more limited color scheme.
