Buffalo Bill’s surname in The Silence of the Lambs (1991) is Gumb; the character is known as Jame Gumb.
Gumb is the film’s main external killer, while FBI trainee Clarice Starling seeks information from the imprisoned psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter. Lecter helps Starling interpret clues as she attempts to locate the killer and rescue Catherine Martin.
Jonathan Demme directed the film, which adapts Thomas Harris’s 1988 novel. Ted Tally wrote the screenplay. Anthony Hopkins played Lecter, and Jodie Foster played Starling; both performances became central to the film’s lasting reputation.
The film won all five major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay. Buffalo Bill’s name is sometimes confused with Hannibal Lecter’s because both characters are associated with the investigation, but Gumb is the killer Starling is trying to identify.
