The first Pokémon video-game adventure is set in the Kanto region.
Kanto is the setting of Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow. It contains the original eight Gyms, the Pokémon League, Professor Oak’s laboratory, and locations such as Viridian City, Lavender Town, and Saffron City.
The region’s design was inspired by the real-world Kantō region of Japan, which includes Tokyo and surrounding prefectures. Pokémon’s fictional Kanto is not a precise map of the real region, but it borrows geographical ideas and place-name structure.
Kanto is sometimes confused with Johto because Pokémon Gold and Silver allow players to revisit Kanto after completing the Johto story. That later game connection does not change the fact that Kanto was the setting of the franchise’s first main adventure.
