In the original Pokémon Red and Green games, which region does the player explore?

The story behind the answer

The original Pokémon Red and Green games take place in the Kanto region.

Kanto is the first major region presented in the Pokémon video-game series. Players travel through towns, routes, caves, forests, and seas while earning eight Gym Badges and progressing toward the Pokémon League. The region’s layout established the exploration structure that later Pokémon games adapted for new settings.

The player begins the journey in Pallet Town and receives a first Pokémon from Professor Oak. Important locations include Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, Lavender Town, Celadon City, Fuchsia City, Saffron City, and Cinnabar Island. The region also contains the Pokémon League at Indigo Plateau.

Kanto is sometimes confused with Johto because the two regions are geographically connected and appear together in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. However, Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow are fundamentally Kanto adventures, centered on the original 151 species.
