Which Pokémon film was adapted into the 2020 remake Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution?

Pokémon: The First Movie was adapted into the 2020 remake Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution.

The original film, released internationally in 1998 and 1999, tells the story of Mewtwo’s creation and its confrontation with Pokémon Trainers. The remake retells that storyline using computer-generated imagery rather than the traditional hand-drawn animation used for the original.

Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution was released in Japan in 2019 and internationally on Netflix in 2020. Its plot follows the same broad events as the first film, including Mewtwo’s invitation to Trainers and the conflict involving Mew.

The two titles are easy to confuse because both feature Mewtwo and the phrase “Mewtwo Strikes Back.” The original is commonly called Pokémon: The First Movie, while the remake’s title explicitly includes Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution.
