In the original Donkey Kong arcade game, a fireball comes out of the oil can. On the opening 25-meter stage, Donkey Kong’s first barrel drops toward the bottom of the screen and ignites the oil can. The resulting fireball becomes a roaming enemy that pursues Mario across the girders and ladders.
The oil can appears again on the 50-meter conveyor-belt stage, where it can also generate fireballs. These enemies are separate from the barrels, hammers, and conveyor belts listed as other hazards. A hammer can destroy a fireball temporarily, but Mario cannot climb or jump while swinging it, so using one involves a trade-off.
The wording can cause a small mix-up because different references call the enemy “Fire,” “Fireball,” or simply “fire.” “Fireball” is the standard quiz answer and the clearest name for the animated flame enemy. The oil can itself is a hazard-producing object, not the enemy being asked about.
