The original Assassin's Creed first released in 2007.
Ubisoft Montreal developed the game, which Ubisoft published for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November 2007. A Windows version followed in April 2008. The game introduced players to Desmond Miles, a modern descendant who relives the memories of his ancestor Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad through the Animus.
Its historical setting is the Third Crusade, with major locations including Masyaf, Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus. Although the series later became known for large role-playing systems and open worlds, the first game focused more heavily on investigation, social stealth, rooftop movement, and a structured assassination cycle.
The 2007 release is sometimes confused with the 2008 Windows launch or with Assassin's Creed II, which arrived in 2009. The original title established the franchise's central conflict between the Assassins and Templars, as well as its recurring theme of historical memories viewed through advanced technology.
