In the original Assassin's Creed, which city is home to Altaïr's headquarters, Masyaf Castle?

The story behind the answer

Masyaf is the headquarters city of Altaïr's Assassin Brotherhood in the original Assassin's Creed.

The game is set during the Third Crusade, and Masyaf serves as the Assassins' mountain stronghold. Altaïr returns there after missions to receive guidance, report to Al Mualim, and learn more about the conflict between the Assassins and the Templars. The settlement is presented as a fortified village dominated by the castle.

Masyaf is also a real town in western Syria, associated historically with the Nizari Ismaili state. The game uses that historical setting while adding fictional characters and events. Players sometimes confuse Masyaf with one of Altaïr's major target cities, such as Acre, Damascus, or Jerusalem, but those are mission locations rather than the Brotherhood's home base.

Later Assassin's Creed stories revisit Masyaf, reinforcing its importance in the series' mythology and linking it with the legacy of earlier Assassin leaders.
