In the original Assassin's Creed, which city is Altaïr sent to investigate after Damascus?

The story behind the answer

In the original Assassin's Creed, Altaïr is sent to investigate Acre after Damascus.

The 2007 game follows Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, an Assassin whose rank and equipment are reduced after he breaks the Brotherhood's rules during a mission. His redemption requires him to complete a sequence of investigations and assassinations across the Holy Land during the Third Crusade.

Acre, Damascus, and Jerusalem are the three principal cities visited during the historical sections. Acre was a major fortified port, while Damascus and Jerusalem had different political and religious importance. The game presents these locations through a stylized version of the late twelfth-century Levant rather than as a complete historical reconstruction.

A common mix-up is confusing Acre with Masyaf. Masyaf is the mountain settlement that serves as the Assassins' headquarters and is where Altaïr reports to Al Mualim. Acre is instead one of the cities where Altaïr investigates targets and gathers information before an assassination.
