In the original Assassin's Creed, Masyaf serves as the Assassin Brotherhood's mountain headquarters.
Masyaf is the home of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and the Levantine Brotherhood during the game's Third Crusade setting. Altaïr returns there between missions to receive instructions, report his progress, and meet the Brotherhood's leader, Al Mualim. The fortress also provides the game's main training and debriefing environment.
The game presents Masyaf as a fortified settlement in the mountains of the Levant. Its high walls and elevated location reinforce the Brotherhood's secrecy and defensive position. Although the player visits several major cities, including Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus, Masyaf remains the central base throughout the campaign.
Masyaf is sometimes confused with Alamut, a historic fortress associated with the Nizari Ismailis and often linked in popular culture with the word “Assassins.” Acre is another important location in the game, but it is a port city and a mission area rather than Altaïr's headquarters.
