In the original Assassin's Creed game, released in 2007, which Assassin is the main playable character?

The story behind the answer

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad is the main playable Assassin in the original Assassin's Creed game, released in 2007.

Altaïr is a Syrian Assassin serving under Al Mualim during the Third Crusade. The game follows his loss of rank after a failed mission, followed by a sequence of assassinations intended to restore his reputation. His targets are connected to the Templar Order and to political conflicts in the Holy Land.

The game visits historical cities including Masyaf, Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus. Altaïr's story is set mainly in 1191, while the modern-day sections introduce Desmond Miles and the Animus. This structure became a defining feature of the franchise: players experience a historical character through a modern character's genetic memories.

Altaïr is sometimes confused with Ezio Auditore, who leads three later main games, or with Desmond, the modern-day protagonist of the first five major installments. Altaïr also appears in later franchise stories, but he is most directly associated with the first game.
