In the Old Testament, how many decks did Noah’s Ark have?

In the Old Testament, Noah’s Ark had three decks.

Genesis 6:16 describes the ark as having lower, second, and third decks. The same verse gives other construction details, including a window and a door in the side. The ark is presented as a huge vessel built to preserve Noah, his family, and representatives of the animals during the Flood.

Genesis specifies the ark’s length as 300 cubits, its width as 50 cubits, and its height as 30 cubits. The exact modern length of a cubit is uncertain, so translations may express the dimensions differently. The text also says the ark was made of gopher wood and coated with pitch inside and out.

A common mix-up is treating the ark’s decks as rooms or counting the roof as a fourth deck. Genesis explicitly names three levels. The story continues with the Flood, the ark resting on the mountains of Ararat, and a covenant symbolized by the rainbow.
