The Gospel of John records Jesus’ first miracle at Cana, where he turns water into wine.
John describes the event as taking place at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’ mother tells him that the wine has run out, and Jesus instructs servants to fill six stone jars with water. The water becomes wine when it is drawn out.
John calls this event the first of Jesus’ signs. The Gospel uses “sign” for miracles that reveal Jesus’ identity and significance, rather than presenting them only as displays of power.
The other three canonical Gospels do not include the Cana wedding miracle. Cana is traditionally identified with a site in Galilee, though its precise historical location remains debated. A common mix-up is to call the event Jesus’ first miracle in every Gospel; only John explicitly labels it his first sign.
