The Gospel of John contains the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Lazarus is presented as the brother of Martha and Mary and as a friend loved by Jesus.
John places the episode at Bethany, near Jerusalem. Lazarus has been in the tomb for four days when Jesus arrives. After speaking with Martha, Jesus goes to the tomb and commands Lazarus to come out. The story includes the short verse, “Jesus wept,” before the miracle.
The raising of Lazarus is the longest miracle narrative in John and functions as a major turning point. John presents it as a sign pointing to Jesus’s identity and to the theme of resurrection and life.
The Synoptic Gospels do not include this Lazarus episode, although Luke has a different character named Lazarus in the parable of the rich man and the poor man. Those two figures should not be confused.
