In the Netherlands, both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are national holidays. In Dutch, they are called Eerste Paasdag, or First Easter Day, and Tweede Paasdag, or Second Easter Day.
Unlike many countries that treat Easter mainly as a single Sunday observance, the Netherlands recognizes two official Easter days. Easter Sunday is the principal Christian celebration of Jesus’s resurrection, while Easter Monday extends the holiday into a long weekend. The dates change each year because Easter is calculated using the lunar calendar, falling between late March and late April.
Easter Monday is also commonly associated with the Dutch phrase Tweede Paasdag. Although it is an official public holiday, Dutch law does not automatically require every employee to receive the day off or a paid holiday; employment contracts and collective agreements can determine those details. The Netherlands also observes two days each for Christmas and Pentecost, another feature of its public-holiday calendar.
