Sandra Bullock’s computer analyst Bennett is named Angela in the 1995 film The Net.
Angela Bennett is a software specialist who works remotely and spends much of her time examining programs for security flaws. During a trip to Mexico, she receives a disk containing access to a powerful computer system and soon becomes the target of a conspiracy.
The conspirators erase Angela’s digital identity and replace it with criminal records belonging to another woman. This premise reflects a 1990s fear that databases and networked systems could define a person’s identity more powerfully than physical documents.
Irwin Winkler directed The Net, which was released in 1995. The film also stars Jeremy Northam as Jack Devlin and Diane Baker as Angela’s mother. Bullock returned as executive producer for the 2006 television adaptation, The Net.
