In The Mummy (1999), what is the name of the ancient Egyptian city where Imhotep is buried?

The story behind the answer

In The Mummy (1999), Imhotep is buried in the fictional ancient Egyptian city of Hamunaptra, known as the City of the Dead.

The adventure begins when librarian and aspiring Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan discovers references to the lost city. She, her brother Jonathan, and adventurer Rick O’Connell travel there with an American expedition seeking treasure.

Brendan Fraser played O’Connell, Rachel Weisz played Evelyn, and Arnold Vosloo played Imhotep. Stephen Sommers wrote and directed the film, which reimagines Universal’s 1932 horror movie as a large-scale action adventure.

Hamunaptra is invented for the film rather than being a documented historical city. The story uses real Egyptian imagery, mythology, and archaeological settings, but Imhotep’s supernatural resurrection and the city’s treasure-filled ruins belong to the movie’s fantasy world.
