In the movie "Over the Hedge," RJ owes Vincent the bear food.
RJ is a raccoon who tries to steal Vincent's winter food supply while the bear is hibernating. The attempt goes wrong: Vincent wakes up, and the stockpile is destroyed. To save himself, RJ promises to replace all the food within six days. That debt drives the rest of the story and explains why he persuades Verne and the other woodland animals to raid the nearby human neighborhood.
The food is not simply a casual favor. Vincent is a large, threatening American black bear, and he makes clear that RJ will face serious consequences if he fails to repay him. RJ initially manipulates the animals by presenting suburban food collecting as an exciting way to survive, while hiding his real motive.
Released in 2006, the animated film was directed by Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick and adapted from the comic strip by Michael Fry and T. Lewis. Its plot combines the animals' struggle with suburban development and RJ's attempt to settle his dangerous obligation.
