In The Matrix (1999), Agent Smith is the program that acts as the machines’ chief enforcer.
Agent Smith is one of the artificial programs that police the simulated world. He can take control of people connected to the Matrix and pursues Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity as they try to free human minds. His formal title is usually given simply as Agent Smith, distinguishing him from the other agents seen in the film.
Hugo Weaving plays Smith with a controlled, official manner that emphasizes the character’s role as a system administrator and security force. Smith describes humans as a problem within the machine-controlled world, making him both a physical threat and a spokesman for the system’s logic.
Agent Smith is not the Matrix’s creator. The Architect, introduced later in the series, is the program associated with designing the Matrix. The Keymaker is another separate program. In the original 1999 film, Smith is the principal enforcer confronting the hacker resistance led by Morpheus.
