Morpheus is Neo’s mentor and the leader of the rebel crew in The Matrix (1999).
Played by Laurence Fishburne, Morpheus believes that Thomas Anderson, known online as Neo, may be the prophesied One. He searches for Neo, helps him leave the simulated world and trains him to understand the nature of the Matrix.
Morpheus commands the hovercraft Nebuchadnezzar, whose crew includes Trinity, Cypher, Tank and Dozer. His name alludes to Morpheus, the Greek god associated with dreams, which suits his role in awakening people from an artificial reality.
Morpheus is sometimes confused with Agent Smith because both are major figures in the film. They occupy opposite sides of the conflict: Morpheus fights the machine-controlled system, while Smith is an agent created to enforce it. Laurence Fishburne returned as Morpheus in later Matrix-related productions.
