In The Mask (1994), what is the name of Jim Carrey’s character?

The story behind the answer

Jim Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss in The Mask (1994), a mild-mannered bank clerk who transforms after finding a magical mask.

The mask gives its wearer exaggerated cartoon-like powers and a green-faced alter ego. Stanley’s transformed identity is often called the Mask, but Stanley Ipkiss is the character’s ordinary human name and the film’s canonical answer.

Chuck Russell directed the movie, which was adapted from the Dark Horse Comics character created by Mike Richardson. Cameron Diaz made her film debut as Tina Carlyle, and the cast also included Peter Riegert and Peter Greene.

The Mask became a major box-office success and helped establish Carrey as a leading comic performer during his breakout period in the 1990s. It is separate from Carrey’s other 1990s characters, including Ace Ventura and Lloyd Christmas.
