In The Hate U Give, what is the name of Starr Carter’s private school?

In The Hate U Give, Starr Carter attends the private Williamson Prep school.

Angie Thomas’s 2017 novel follows Starr, a Black teenager who lives in the predominantly Black neighborhood of Garden Heights but attends the mostly white Williamson Prep. This movement between two communities is central to the novel’s story, because Starr changes how she speaks and behaves depending on where she is.

The plot begins after Starr witnesses a police officer shoot and kill her childhood friend Khalil. As the event gains public attention, Starr must decide how to respond while dealing with pressure from school, her neighborhood, the media, and law enforcement. Williamson Prep therefore represents more than a setting: it highlights the social and cultural divide Starr navigates.

The novel’s title refers to the phrase “Thug Life,” explained in the book as meaning “The Hate U Give Little Infants F***s Everybody.” The Hate U Give was Thomas’s debut novel and was adapted into a 2018 film starring Amandla Stenberg as Starr.
