In the Harry Potter books, Gringotts is the wizarding bank in Diagon Alley.
Gringotts Wizarding Bank is run by goblins and serves as the main financial institution of British wizarding society. Harry first visits it with Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, shortly after learning that his parents left him a substantial inheritance.
The bank’s underground vaults are protected by elaborate security measures, including magical locks, dragons and other enchantments. Harry later returns to Gringotts for increasingly dangerous missions. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, he, Ron and Hermione break into the Lestrange family vault with the help of the goblin Griphook.
Gringotts is more than a place for storing money. Its vaults hold important magical objects, including Helga Hufflepuff’s cup, which becomes one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. The bank’s goblin staff also reflects the books’ broader, complicated treatment of relations between wizards and goblins.
