In the Harry Potter books, what address is the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix?

The story behind the answer

12 Grimmauld Place is the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix in the Harry Potter books.

The London townhouse was inherited by Sirius Black from his family. It becomes a protected meeting place for the Order during the period when Lord Voldemort has returned. The Fidelius Charm hides the address from people who have not been told its secret.

The house is associated with the Black family’s old pure-blood traditions. Its grim interior, dark history, and hostile house-elf portrait contrast sharply with the warmer atmosphere of the Weasley family home, the Burrow.

Harry stays at 12 Grimmauld Place before and during parts of the fifth book. Readers sometimes confuse it with Number Four, Privet Drive, Harry’s childhood address, or the Burrow, where the Weasleys live. Grimmauld Place is specifically the Order’s concealed London headquarters.
