In the Gospel of Luke, how many disciples meet Jesus on the road to Emmaus?

The story behind the answer

In the Gospel of Luke, two disciples meet Jesus on the road to Emmaus.

Luke 24 describes two followers traveling from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus on the day of the resurrection. Jesus joins them, but they do not recognize him at first. He explains the Scriptures concerning the Messiah, and they later recognize him during the breaking of bread.

Luke names one traveler as Cleopas but does not identify the other by name. The account says Emmaus was about sixty stadia from Jerusalem, though the exact location of the village remains uncertain.

The story is especially associated with recognition, Scripture, and shared food. It is distinct from the appearances to the gathered apostles later in the same chapter, so the two travelers should not be counted as the full group of Twelve.
