In The Godfather, Vito Corleone says, “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.”
The line is spoken by Vito during a conversation with his godson Johnny Fontane. Johnny wants Vito’s help securing a film role that could revive his career. Vito promises to speak with the film producer, Jack Woltz, and describes his method in the film’s most famous formulation: the producer will receive an offer he cannot refuse.
The phrase became one of the best-known quotations in American cinema because it turns a polite-sounding expression into a threat. Vito’s controlled delivery makes the line memorable, while the later visit to Woltz’s mansion shows what the “offer” means in practice. Woltz wakes up with the severed head of his prized horse in his bed.
Michael later uses the same phrase in the trilogy, which can cause confusion over who said it first. The original quotation belongs to Vito in the first film, although it becomes associated with the Corleone family generally.
