In The Godfather, which actor plays Captain Mark McCluskey?

The story behind the answer

Sterling Hayden plays Captain Mark McCluskey in The Godfather.

McCluskey is a corrupt New York police captain who protects drug trafficker Virgil Sollozzo. After Michael Corleone shoots both men in an Italian restaurant, McCluskey’s death becomes a major turning point: Michael must leave the United States and hide in Sicily.

Hayden had already become known for distinctive roles in films such as The Asphalt Jungle and Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. His imposing presence helped make McCluskey appear physically threatening even though the character has limited screen time.

The character is sometimes confused with Sonny Corleone’s bodyguard, Paulie Gatto, or with the Corleone family’s corrupt associates. McCluskey is specifically a police captain, and his murder is the first time Michael personally kills someone.
