In The Godfather, what is the surname of Michael’s first wife, Apollonia?

The story behind the answer

In The Godfather, Michael’s first wife, Apollonia, has the surname Vitelli.

Apollonia Vitelli is a young Sicilian woman whom Michael meets while hiding in Sicily after killing Sollozzo and Captain McCluskey. She is the daughter of Signor Vitelli, the owner of a local bar. Michael’s bodyguards introduce the families, and Michael and Apollonia marry in Sicily.

Apollonia’s story is often confused with Kay Adams’s because Kay is Michael’s American wife at the beginning and end of the film. Apollonia is Michael’s Sicilian wife, and her death in a car bombing becomes a major turning point in his transformation.

The character appears only in the first film, although Michael’s Sicilian marriage remains important to his backstory in later installments.
