In The Godfather, the undertaker who asks Vito Corleone for help is Bonasera.
Amerigo Bonasera appears in the film’s opening scene at Vito’s daughter Connie’s wedding. He is an Italian-American undertaker whose daughter has been attacked by two young men. When the courts give them a relatively light punishment, Bonasera asks Vito to arrange their deaths. Vito refuses that exact request but agrees to have them beaten, creating an obligation between the two men.
The scene establishes several important ideas immediately. Vito’s public role as a family patriarch contrasts with his private authority over violence, while Bonasera’s request shows how members of the community seek justice outside formal institutions. Vito also reprimands Bonasera for approaching him without proper respect or friendship.
Bonasera later prepares Sonny Corleone’s body after the tollbooth ambush. The undertaker is therefore connected to both the opening request and one of the film’s most important deaths.
