In The Godfather, what is the first name of Michael Corleone’s Sicilian wife?

The story behind the answer

In The Godfather, Michael Corleone’s Sicilian wife is named Apollonia.

Michael meets Apollonia while hiding in Sicily after killing Sollozzo and Captain McCluskey in New York. During his exile, Michael lives under the protection of Don Tommasino, an old friend of his father. Apollonia is the daughter of a local Sicilian family, and Michael becomes interested in her after seeing her during a village encounter.

Their relationship develops according to traditional Sicilian courtship customs. Michael asks her father for permission to marry her, and the wedding takes place in Sicily. The marriage is brief because Apollonia is killed by a car bomb intended for Michael. The bombing is carried out by Fabrizio, one of Michael’s bodyguards, who has been bribed by Michael’s enemies.

Apollonia is not Michael’s later American wife, Kay Adams. That distinction is important: Apollonia belongs to Michael’s Sicilian exile, while Kay represents his life in the United States before and after his rise to power.
