In The Godfather Part II, the immigrant ship carrying Vito to New York is the Moshulu.
The ship appears during the flashback sequence showing Vito Andolini’s arrival in the United States. After escaping Sicily, the young Vito reaches New York and is placed in quarantine because he is ill. From the ship, he sees the Statue of Liberty, marking his first view of the country where he will build a new life.
The voyage is important because it connects Vito’s displacement with the beginning of his American identity. An immigration official changes his recorded surname from Andolini to Corleone after misunderstanding the boy’s place of origin. That change eventually becomes the name associated with his family and criminal empire.
The Moshulu is a real historic sailing ship, but the film uses it as part of Vito’s fictional biography. It is not the name of Vito’s hometown or family. Corleone is the Sicilian town, while Moshulu is the ship associated with his arrival in New York.
