The first Pokémon games take place in the Kanto region.
Kanto is the setting of Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow, as well as the first season of the anime. It contains familiar locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, Saffron City, and the Pokémon League.
The region is loosely based on Japan's real Kantō region, which includes Tokyo and surrounding prefectures. Pokémon's Kanto is a fictionalized game world rather than a precise map, but the inspiration is visible in its geography and city layout.
Kanto is often confused with Johto because the two regions are directly connected in Pokémon Gold and Silver. Players can revisit Kanto after completing the main Johto adventure, making it one of the few regions that serves as both a game's main setting and a substantial post-game area.
