In the first Assassin's Creed game, Masyaf serves as the Assassin Brotherhood's headquarters during the story.
Masyaf is a fortified mountain settlement in present-day Syria. In the game, it is the home of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and the base of operations for the Levantine Brotherhood led by Al Mualim. Altaïr repeatedly returns there to receive assignments, report on completed missions, and advance the story.
The game also uses Masyaf to establish the Brotherhood's internal hierarchy and rules. Its high walls, elevated position, and secluded setting contrast with the busy cities where Altaïr carries out investigations and assassinations. The settlement is therefore both a narrative hub and a visual symbol of the Assassins' hidden organization.
Masyaf is sometimes confused with the game's target cities, including Damascus, Acre, and Jerusalem. Those cities are mission locations, whereas Masyaf is the Brotherhood's headquarters. Historically, Masyaf is associated with the Nizari Ismaili community and the medieval fortress that inspired the game's setting.
