In the film Moon, the artificial-intelligence computer assisting Sam Bell is named GERTY. GERTY operates the lunar base where Bell works alone, managing systems, communications, maintenance, and the automated equipment used to harvest helium-3.
Kevin Spacey provides GERTY’s voice, while the computer communicates partly through screens displaying changing emoji-like symbols. This visual system gives GERTY a distinctive personality without relying only on spoken dialogue.
GERTY is sometimes mixed up with HAL 9000, the computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey, because both assist isolated space workers. They are separate fictional systems in different films. Moon, released in 2009, was directed by Duncan Jones and focuses on identity, corporate control, and the human cost of industrial space operations.
