In the "Fast & Furious" films, what is the name of the character played by Vin Diesel?

The story behind the answer

In the “Fast & Furious” films, Vin Diesel plays Dominic Toretto. Usually called Dom, Toretto is the franchise’s central driver, mechanic, crew leader, and fiercely protective family man.

The character first appeared in The Fast and the Furious (2001), where he runs an illegal street-racing crew in Los Angeles and becomes involved with Brian O’Conner, an undercover police officer played by Paul Walker. Their rivalry gradually becomes a friendship and ultimately a family-like bond. Dom’s signature values are loyalty, courage, and putting family before personal gain.

Dominic was inspired partly by real street-racing culture, including a 1998 Vibe magazine article that helped inspire the original film. Across the series, he evolves from a local racer involved in truck hijackings into a globe-trotting heist leader and government operative, while still being defined by cars, racing, and his relationship with Letty Ortiz.

A common mix-up is confusing Dom with Brian O’Conner, Luke Hobbs, or Roman Pearce. Those are major characters, but only Dominic Toretto is played by Vin Diesel.
