In the Exodus account, Moses receives the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai.
After leaving Egypt, the Israelites arrive at Mount Sinai in the third month. Exodus describes the mountain as surrounded by thunder, lightning, a cloud, and a loud trumpet blast. Moses goes up the mountain, where God establishes a covenant with Israel and gives commandments governing worship, justice, family life, property, and community conduct.
The Ten Commandments are recorded in Exodus 20 and repeated, with differences in setting and wording, in Deuteronomy 5. Biblical tradition also associates Sinai with additional laws and with the construction of the Tabernacle, the portable sanctuary used by the Israelites in the wilderness.
The exact modern location of biblical Mount Sinai is uncertain. Several mountains in the Sinai Peninsula and elsewhere have been proposed, but no identification is universally accepted. Mount Nebo is associated instead with Moses's later view of the Promised Land before his death.
