In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Enkidu is the wild man who becomes civilized through Shamhat.
The gods create Enkidu as a counterweight to Gilgamesh, whose behavior has troubled the people of Uruk. Enkidu initially lives among animals in the wilderness and protects them from hunters. Shamhat, a temple courtesan, encounters him and introduces him to human society through a transformative sexual relationship.
After this encounter, the animals no longer accept Enkidu as one of their own. He learns human food, clothing, speech and social customs, then travels toward Uruk. His first meeting with Gilgamesh becomes a physical contest, but the conflict develops into a profound friendship. Enkidu’s death later changes the direction of the entire epic.
Humbaba is the guardian of the Cedar Forest, while Utnapishtim is the flood survivor who receives immortality. Dumuzi belongs to Sumerian mythology as Inanna’s consort. These figures occupy different roles and should not be substituted for Enkidu.
