In the Epic of Gilgamesh, what is the name of Gilgamesh’s mother who interprets his dreams?

The story behind the answer

In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Ninsun is the mother who interprets Gilgamesh’s dreams. Her explanations help him understand the arrival and importance of Enkidu.

When Gilgamesh dreams about a falling object and a powerful companion, Ninsun explains that the dream points to a friend who will stand beside him. She later interprets another dream involving a meteor-like object, again connecting it with Enkidu.

Ninsun is not the same character as Shamhat, who introduces Enkidu to human society, or Siduri, the tavern keeper encountered during Gilgamesh’s search. Her role combines maternal authority, divine wisdom, and access to dream interpretation.
