In the Despicable Me films, the yellow henchmen speak Minionese. It is the fictional language associated with the Minions, who communicate through comic-sounding words, expressive noises and exaggerated delivery.
Minionese was created by co-director and voice actor Pierre Coffin. Rather than being a fully systematic language like Klingon or Dothraki, it mixes gibberish with recognizable words and sounds drawn from languages including English, French, Spanish, Italian and Indonesian. That blend helps audiences understand the Minions’ emotions and intentions even when the dialogue is not directly translated.
The Minions’ speech is sometimes mistaken for Simlish, the invented language from The Sims video games, but the two are unrelated. Droid Binary is a Star Wars machine-code system, while Parseltongue is the snake language from Harry Potter. Minionese is deliberately playful and only partly intelligible, fitting the characters’ chaotic personalities.
