In the comic series The Sandman, what is the name of Dream’s older sister who rules over death?

The story behind the answer

Death is Dream’s older sister who rules over death in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.

Death is one of the Endless, a family of anthropomorphic beings who personify fundamental forces and experiences. The family includes Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. In the series, Death is portrayed as compassionate, practical, humorous, and closely connected to the living beings whose lives she ends.

She first appeared in The Sandman #8 in 1989. Her visual design, including black clothing and an ankh necklace, became one of the most recognizable character designs associated with the series. Gaiman later explored her further in the spin-off miniseries Death: The High Cost of Living.

Death is sometimes confused with Despair because both are members of the Endless and both represent difficult aspects of existence. Despair is a separate character, while Death is specifically responsible for guiding beings from life into death.
