In the Book of Revelation, what is the name of the river flowing from God’s throne?

The story behind the answer

In the Book of Revelation, the river flowing from God’s throne is called the river of the water of life.

Revelation 22 opens with a vision of “the river of the water of life,” bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the city. The tree of life stands on both sides of the river, bearing twelve kinds of fruit and producing fruit each month.

This final-chapter image echoes earlier biblical themes of Eden, living water, and restoration. The river is part of the New Jerusalem vision, where the curse is removed and God’s servants worship him.

The phrase is sometimes shortened in English to “river of life,” but the fuller wording in Revelation is “the river of the water of life.” It is not the Jordan or the Euphrates, both of which are named elsewhere in biblical literature.
