In the Book of Revelation, what demon is the angel of the bottomless pit? The answer is Abaddon.
Revelation 9:11 describes Abaddon as the angel of the abyss and the king of the locust army released during the fifth trumpet judgment. The passage gives the name in Hebrew as Abaddon and translates it into Greek as Apollyon, meaning “Destroyer.”
The term has an older biblical background. In the Hebrew Bible, Abaddon generally means destruction or a place of destruction, and it appears alongside Sheol, the realm associated with the dead. Revelation develops the word into the name of a powerful angelic figure rather than simply a location.
Abaddon is often called a demon in modern summaries, games, and occult classifications, but Revelation itself calls him an angel. That distinction explains why some religious interpretations treat him as a destructive angel, while later Christian and popular traditions identify him with a demonic ruler. Mastema, Samael, and Azrael belong to other religious or literary traditions and are not Revelation’s angel of the abyss.
