In the Book of Genesis, what was the width of Noah's Ark?

The story behind the answer

In the Book of Genesis, Noah’s Ark was 50 cubits wide. Genesis 6:15 lists the ark’s three principal dimensions: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.

Because the cubit was not a universally fixed measurement, the width cannot be converted with complete precision. Using a commonly cited cubit of roughly 45 centimetres, 50 cubits would be about 22.5 metres, or 75 feet. Other historical cubit standards produce somewhat different figures.

The ark’s stated dimensions form a long, narrow rectangular proportion. Genesis does not describe a conventional pointed bow, stern, sails, or rudder. Instead, it presents a sealed vessel intended to preserve life during the flood.

This width is sometimes confused with the ark’s height, which Genesis gives as 30 cubits. It is also distinct from the three internal levels mentioned in the same construction account. The measurements belong to the biblical narrative and should not be mistaken for archaeological measurements of a surviving ship.
