Noah built the ark after receiving God's instructions in the biblical Noah's Ark story.
In Genesis, Noah is described as a righteous man living in a violent and corrupt world. God tells him to construct a large vessel, bring aboard his family, and preserve representatives of the world's animals. Noah follows the instructions and becomes the central human figure in the flood narrative.
The story appears in Genesis chapters 6–9 and is also known through the Quran, where Noah is called Nuh. The Quran describes him warning his people and building the vessel, but the biblical and Quranic accounts differ in several details. Noah is sometimes confused with other patriarchs such as Abraham or Moses, but neither is the builder of the ark in the flood story.
