Zipporah was the daughter of Jethro who married Moses in the Book of Exodus. Moses met her after fleeing Egypt and arriving in Midian, where he defended Jethro's seven daughters from shepherds and was later welcomed into their household.
Exodus identifies Jethro as a priest of Midian and records that he gave Zipporah to Moses as a wife. She bore Moses a son named Gershom, whose name is connected with Moses' status as a foreigner in a strange land. Later, Zipporah and their children rejoined Moses during the Israelites' journey through the wilderness.
Zipporah is also associated with a dramatic episode on the road back to Egypt, when she circumcised their son and intervened to protect Moses. The biblical text calls Jethro by other names in related passages, including Reuel, which can cause confusion in trivia questions. Zipporah, however, is the consistently named wife in Exodus.
